Frugal Summer Fun

For many parents, finding fun, frugal activities to do with the kids over the summer break can be a challenge. I thought I would share some of the things we do to keep the boredom (and the mom-crazies) at bay.

• Spend a day at the beach.

• Take up letterboxing.

• Read a book together and have a book club party.

• Utilize the summer programs at your local public library.

Our libraries here in Virginia Beach (and, yes - there are many branches in this one city) offer some wonderful programs throughout the year, but especially during the summer months. And they're all free! Check out public libraries to find one near you. This website lists all of the libraries in each state as well as providing the links to their individual websites.

Our library recently held a Civil War presentation which Sullivan enjoyed. I stayed in the wonderful children's section with the younger two.

• Learn all you can about a country you'd love to visit and prepare a special meal of ethnic foods.

• Create Bark Paintings or visit Enchanted Learning for more craft ideas.

• Go bowling for free (check out the link for more details)!

Go camping in your backyard.

• Visit a national park for free on select dates in July and August.

• For some educational fun on the computer, check out these cool websites: Timez Attack, National Geographic Kids, WebRangers, and Spelling City.

• Purchase a membership to a local musuem, aquarium, or science center.

This last idea might not be inexpensive at the start, but purchasing a year membership to special places allows you to visit as often as you'd like. Shortly after moving to the area, we bought a membership to the Virginia Aquarium. This membership provides us with a place to visit when it is too hot to play outside. We can make a short visit and not feel guilty about wasting money. The plan is to spend this year getting to know every nook and cranny of the aquarium and then purchasing a membership to a different place next year.

These are just a few ideas to help pass the time this summer. What types of fun, frugal activities does your family like to do?

  1. It looks like letterboxing is much like geocaching. Sounds like fun!

  2. Yes, it is! We have tried geocaching, but we do not have an accurate enough GPS.

    Thanks for stopping by. :-)
